Another Christmas tradition, if you can call it a tradition is ~
Simplicity in our decorating begins with greens, candles and dried orange slices.
The layout of our home really doesn't allow for a big tree.
In lieu of that we have 3 smaller trees in antique
crocks, all simply decorated with orange slices.
I love the translucence and the way they seem to glow as they
pick up the light ~ Simple and calming.
I make a new batch of these pretty slices every year,
mostly because I love how the house smells while they are drying.
Tho I'm still using some that are at least 4 -5 years old, they eventually darken
and might not "glow" as much :-)
Don't they look lovely just nestled into an antique bowl?
If you'd like to make your own, just follow the directions below.
Set your oven to 200 degrees.
Line cookie trays with foil. ~ optional
Slice navel oranges into about 1/8" or so slices.
(eat the scraps to get your vitamin C for winter!)
Lie orange slices in a single layer on cookie sheets and put into oven.
After about an hour turn them over.
Check them about every 30 minutes and turn again.
They should take about 2 hours or more as everyones oven heats a little differently.
Keep a close eye once they are close to done as they can brown quickly.
Now and then one will stick to the foil, gently peel off and turn over.
Make plenty unless you lose a few.
I also add them to wooden bowls filled with homemade popourri, or hang on garlands.
String with a needle and strong thread.
